The stem is offset from both the disc centreline and the pipe centreline, so the disc lifts away from the seat as it opens. This reduces seat friction and wear and suits higher pressure classes and more frequent operation.

The high performance range is specified where the pressure class, temperature or media demands more than a standard resilient-lined butterfly valve.

A wafer valve is clamped between two flanges by through bolts; a lugged valve has threaded lugs so one side of the line can be removed while the valve stays in place.
