Metallic and Rubber Compared.

Metallic joints

Construction: Formed metal bellows with flanged or welded ends

Typically specified for: Thermal movement in hot service and high-temperature lines

Rubber joints

Construction: Elastomer bellows with flanged ends and, where required, control rods

Typically specified for: Vibration and noise isolation at pumps and rotating equipment

Single Bellow & Double Bellow

02 · Single and Double Bellow

Single and Double Bellow.

A single bellow absorbs movement across one convolution set. A double bellow provides greater movement capacity in the same line, and is specified where axial, lateral or angular movement exceeds what a single bellow can accommodate.

03 · What Expansion Joints Protect

What Expansion Joints Protect.

An expansion joint is installed to absorb movement so the pipework, pumps, valves and anchors do not have to. Thermal growth in a hot line, vibration from a running pump and small installation misalignments all transfer load into flanges and equipment nozzles; the joint takes that movement instead.

06 · Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about Expansion Joints.

The questions consultants, contractors and plant engineers ask most often.

Metallic bellows are generally used where thermal movement and higher temperatures are involved; rubber joints are used to isolate vibration at pumps and rotating equipment.

When the movement to be absorbed exceeds the capacity of a single bellow.
